[Op-Ed] Shinhwa, more than 10 years, “consistent 16 years” stands out more amidst reunion rush

On 16th’s broadcast of SBS “Magic Eye”, Lee Hyori’s wish for Fin.K.L’s reunion has attracted the attention of fans. Also present was god member Kim Taewoo. This year, god had released a new album for the first time in 9 years, and are meeting fans as a full 5-member group for the first time in 12 years.

Fin.K.L and god are both so-called 1st generation idols, having had the greatest popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s. Debuting in May 1998, Fin.K.L. did not use the word disband but after releasing their last digital single in 2005, there hasn’t been a time where the 4 members, Lee Hyori, Ok Juhyun, Lee Jin, Sung Yuri have gathered together to release a new song.

Debuting in early 1999, god didn’t release a new song after their 7th full album in 2005, and, 9 years later, members Park Junhyung, Danny Ahn, Yoon Kyesang, Son Hoyoung, Kim Taewoo gathered together to release their 8th full album this July. They have even completed a domestic concert tour this Summer. It has been 12 years since the group gathered together fully, including Yoon Kyesang, since 2002’s 5th album.

Debuting in 1999, Hwanhee and Brian’s Fly To The Sky also revealed a new album this May, reuniting after 5 years, and idol band Buzz, who took their first step into the music industry in 2003, also released a new single last August, reuniting again after 8 years.

These idol groups who had reached the peak of their careers in the late 90s and early-mid 2000s, have been around for more than 10 years and their long-awaited reunion brought on continued success for their digital releases and concerts, showing extraordinary attention from fans.

In the reunion rush of the 1st generation idol groups this year, what stands out in my mind is one team. And that is Korea’s longest running idol group Shinhwa, who has consistently held music activities for more than 16 years.

After Shinhwa released their first full album “The Solver” in 1998, they released their 2nd album “T.O.P” in 1999, 3rd album “Only One” in 2000, 4th album “Hey Come On” in 2001, 5th album “Perfect Man” in March 2002, 6th album “Your Wedding” in December 2002, 7th album “Brand New” in 2004, 8th album “State Of The Art” in 2006, 9th album “Shinhwa 9th” in 2008, 10th album “The Return” in 2012, “The Classic” in 2013 and have continually had music activities for 16 years.
